The Story:
Gottdamn I can’t even remember what I watched. But basically I watched so many movies that I could almost complete this challenge that supposedly be done in a year. And I almost finished it in a month! Damn crazy woman. In December, I watched both theatrical versions of Murder on The Orient Express. Thoughts? I have none. Maybe those were not my kind of movie. I watched a couple of animated movies but two that really struck me were In This Corner of The World and Tokyo Godfathers. So good!!! The first one had a gentle feel to it (which I love) and the latter was so funny (of course it was a black comedy). Sliding Doors was surprisingly nice, and i….like it.
I watched some noirs and neo-noirs too. Yes all of them were brilliant and I like, like, like this genre, dare I say it. Sunset Boulevard became the newest addition to my favorite movies list. I am obsessed with that movie. All About Eve is all about everything I love in a movie. Bitchy characters, bitchy drama, damn good script. That Thing You Do! was fun and got some catchy tunes, I literally listened to the soundtracks maybe like a million times. AND DAMN was Thomas Everett Scott cute or what?? I also like A League of Their Own and Thelma and Louise. Geena Davis is a literal goddess, especially in A League of Their Own.
I still have a lot to say but really I’m just so tired.
So….bye!
(I may or may not continue this rubric in 2018)

Right off the bat, our very own Star of The Month is clearly Winona Ryder (1, 2, 11). Omg i can give commentaries to all movies on this list (only 12!!). MAUDIE IS MY KIND OF MOVIEEEE I LOVE IT huhu so nice and heartwarming and just so sweet??? aint gonna talk about no 8. Stepmom is that nice fall movie and makes u sad. gettin on ma hitchcock with rope (i did it for the short runtime and jimmy stewart). I thought i would hate reality bites but in fact i didnt. winona’s character is not dumb and thats good. ethan hawke looked good but boi wash your hair, its greasy af. get out was just a rewatch.

P.S.: I USED THE WORD “NICE” A LOT DIDN’T I.

See u.

What’s Playing in September

Okay. I’m so tired. I’ve got so many things to do that I’m actually doing nothing and this has to stop!!!!!

So, my theory’s back. Under pressure = a fucking ton of movies. I don’t get it. Like, why?

This is my shame list:

1. Ocean Waves (1993)
2. Take Shelter (2011)
3. A Simple Life (2011)
4. The VVitch (2015)
5. It (2017)
6. Spirited Away (2011)
7. The Big Sick (2017)
8. Scream (1996)
9. Our Little Sister (Umimachi Diary) (2015)
10. As Good As It Gets (1997)
11. Departures (2008)
12. 12 Angry Men (1957) SEE THE NUMBER!!
13. To Kill A Mockingbird (1962)
14. This is Spinal Tap (1984)
15. Better Off Dead… (1985)
16. It Happened One Night (1934)
17. The Apartment (1960)
18. Roman Holiday (1953)
19. Broadcast News (1987)

26. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986)
27. Pengabdi Setan (2017)
28. Blade Runner (1982)

A fucking ton.

The Story:

I watched a few horror movies there. One thing that surprised me: I wasn’t as scared as I used to be. Like, yeah it was quite scary when I was watching it but after that I was like “well ok”.

MY 12th MOVIE IS 12 ANGRY MEN. I fucking love coincidences.

I did some classic romances and my favorite is The Apartment. It is unbelievably good. Great acting, great story, it’s amazing. I read Umimachi Diary first (manga) but it was a long time ago, I already forgot what it was about. The movie is an epitome of feel-good, slice-of-life, gentle cinema. Well almost all of Japanese movies that I watched (or going to watch) are slow-moving and heartwarming. Like Departures and Midnight Diner. Love u heartwarming Japanese movies.

I watched Alien for the first time AND I FREAKING LOVE ITTTTT. It is so great I’m crying. I haven’t finished Aliens, but I think I will still prefer the first one because there’s less action? More hide-and-seek, cat-and-mouse game. AND Oh My Golly, did you see Tom Skerritt in it???? So attractive. I don’t know why and how, but I already liked him the first time I saw him (Steel Magnolias, he’s already old in it). I also think he looked a bit like Ethan Hawke in this movie??? AND JOHN HURT WAS SO ADORABLE. Pity that he’s the first one to die. I initially loathe Ash, but actually fuck u company.

Annie Hall gets on my nerves. I really can’t watch movies with neurotic people in it. Well, I can’t live with them too. But to tell you the truth, the end really gets me, in a good way. It’s kinda sad, how Alvy actually still loves her.

I hate Ferris Bueller. Wtf? Live and let go and become irresponsible? Bye. You’re the villain of your own movie. I love Cameron tho. It should be titled “Cameron Frye’s Day Disturbed by His So-Called ‘Friend'”.

Star of The Month: John Cusack (15 and 23). I think that’s all…….? I really forgot. OH and Gregory Peck!! (13 and 18).

To sum it up: I watched a lot of good movies in September.

See you.

What’s Playing in August

OH MY LORDY LORD. It has only been A FUCKING WEEK but college has already gave me some serious anxiety issues. Last month (August), I watched a fucking ton on movies. 34. you are the apple of my eye (2011)
THATS A LOT I DONT EVEN WANNA TYPE EM IN, I JUST COPY THEM (and abandoning my aesthetic shit).
The Story:
August was Rom-Com month. I watch at least 20 romcoms, any kind of them. The good ones, the bad ones, and of course the ugly ones. My favourite was (is) when harry met sally. No wonder this movies becomes a classic and staple romcom. The story is so good, even though you can already guess the ending. Real example of it’s not about how the ending is, but about how they present the ending.
Somehow every month, there’s always one actor who appeared multiple times in multiple movies, as main or lesser-main cast. This person will get an honorary award as Star of The Month. This month it’s Greg Kinnear. He appeared in someone like you, nurse betty, and sabrina. Oh and Richard Gere!! He appeared in pretty woman, runaway bride, and shall we dance. Honorary mentions are Julia Roberts (pretty woman and runaway bride), Drew Barrymore (fever pitch and going the distances), Hugh Jackman (who’s absolutely charming in kate & leopold and someone like you), Meg Ryan (when harry met sally and kate & leopold), and the cast of sex and the city. I might be forgetting some people, but come on, give me a break. I watched so many movies ok???
There are some movies that surprised me. In a good way. Like Princess Bride. Classic, love it. Imagine Me & You. Sweet and unorthodox, adore it. Dirty Dancing. IT’S DANCING, can’t hate it.
I did some Hitchcock’s. I’m good. Maybe suspense’s not really my thing?
I also went on to a little East Asian journey there. Which I continued until early September.
See ya.

What’s Playing in July

My my myyy. It’s happening. I don’t watch movies as many as before. I only (yes, only) watched 13 movies last month, five of them were watched over the last weekend :).

Here goes the list:

  1. Spiderman: Homecoming (2017) (Twice)
  2. Spiderman (2002)
  3. Cinderella (2015)
  4. The Secret World of Arrietty (2010)
  5. Sunshine Cleaning (2008)
  6. Julie and Julia (2009)
  7. Chef (2014)
  8. Dunkirk (2017)
  9. Monsters, Inc. (2001)
  10. Up (2009)
  11. Monsters University (2013)
  12. Cars (2006)
  13. Cars 2 (2011)

The Story:

Yes, as you can see I watched five Pixar movies back to back. Happened in one weekend. Of course I cried watching Up, but also made me realize how annoying Russell was!!! (If any of my friends read this they will certainly say “Not even a news. You hate kids. No, you hate people”). Watching Cars and Cars 2 is another story. It felt like doing a chore or a homework??? I didn’t enjoy it thoroughly and wished it to end soon.

Dunkirk was good. Made me cry too (okay this is getting old……because I cry a fukin lot). Somehow I had a strong desire to watch food related movies, I downloaded four and watched two of them. I really like this “live your life and cook your food” vibe (vibe apaantuh ngarang banget hahaha).

Homecoming! I like it! Nice summer blockbuster and Tom was hella cute. Michael was amazing as always. For film no. 2, it was my first time watching it. Before, I was always skeptical of Tobey but turned out he was fine.

.

Well that’s it. See ya!

What’s Playing in January: Introduction

Earlier this year, I decided to list every movies (so far strictly movies, no series) I’ve watched and grouped them based on month. I also will list movie that I re-watch, so not only movies that I watch for the first time. Sadly, I won’t list any movie that I don’t finish, even if I know how it ends or I’ve watched halfway through.

So here’s the list of what’s playing in January:

  1. Pulp Fiction (1994)
  2. Léon: The Professional (1994)
  3. The Squid and The Whale (2005)
  4. The Big Chill (1983)
  5. Terms of Endearment (1983)
  6. Jaws (1975)
  7. All That Jazz (1979)
  8. His Girl Friday (1940)
  9. Milk (2008)
  10. Stuck in Love (2012)
  11. La La Land (2016)
  12. Arrival (2016)
  13. Anomalisa (2015)
  14. Pleasantville (1998)
  15. Austenland (2013)
  16. Mary Poppins (1964)
  17. The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1996)
  18. Paranorman (2012)
  19. The American President (1995)
  20. Northanger Abbey (2007)

The story:

Jadi sebenernya udah punya film no. 1 lamaa banget di laptop, tapi malah nontonnya di hp selama perjalanan Jogja-Jakarta. Sebenernya abis itu nonton The Time Traveler’s Wife tapi kok ya ga selesai. Kaget juga ternyata suka banget sama film no. 2 padahal ga suka film action atau yang banyak pew pewnya gitu, mungkin karena ini crime drama kali ya, tetep ada dramanya jadi suka. Film no. 3 agak bikin capek karena realistis??? haha gitu lah agak anyep rasanya abis nonton.

Niat hati mau liat Jeff Goldblum di film no. 4 tapi malah fokus sama Kevin Kline. Aneh banget sih inii karena sebenernya doi ga ganteng tapi bener-bener menarik (?) dan bener-bener bapak-bapak deh. Abis nonton film ini jadi nyari-nyari film Kevin Kline yang asik hahaha groupies abis. SUKA sama film no. 6!!

Nonton film no. 8 berkat cari- cari rom-com (biasa lah) dan ketemu list rom-com jadul gitu.

Still Alice

still-alice

Maybe I’ll do something different this time. Instead of just writing the name of the movie and what I thought about it (and giving the IMDB link), I’ll write a movie review about it.

*Warning: The following thing you’re gonna read is ~extremely~ personal and subjective, albeit the writer’s effort to make it non-biased and spoiler-free*

About a week ago, I decided to watch Still Alice, the movie that finally gave Julianne Moore her long-deserved Oscar. The movie’s premise is about a linguistic professor, Dr. Alice Howland, that was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Although the disease is often associated with older people (majority of people who have it are 65 and up), Alice wouldn’t even get a senior discount because she just turned fifty at the beginning of the movie. She was a mentally and physically active person. The type of Alzheimer’s she had was the early-onset one. To make matter worse, it was genetic too.

Alice who relied so much on her memory and thought that she was defined by her brain felt like her world began to collapse. What would happen to her teaching, that was not just her job but also her life? How could she tell her own children that they might have the same disease? Simple life tasks began to be more challenging, even remembering simple things she used to know like where the bathroom was, or her usual jogging track. As the movie progresses, so does her Alzheimer’s.

Julianne Moore gave such a great portrayal of a devastated woman who was trying so hard to cope with a major change in her life. Alec Baldwin, Kristen Stewart, Kate Bosworth, and Hunter Parrish also gave some nice supporting acts that show the dynamics of the family that tried to deal with the issue. Although the movie doesn’t have extremely beautiful visuals, it has a strong story and a delightfully moving way to deliver it.
